Notes From the Forge, part I

People have often asked me to elucidate on what I’ve actually done to create Advanced HeroQuest: Reforged, so this is the first in a series of posts on the matter.

 

The first, and main, item that needed to be fixes was the fact that all combats were want to devolve down to the same tactic, since any other tactic would lead to the Heroes losing.

 

This tactic was to use the door of a room to ensure only a few enemies could attack the Heroes, while letting the Heroes get as many attacks as possible.

 

To fix this, I made several changes. The first was to make all doors two spaces wide. This made it harder for the Heroes to block the door, and allowed more monsters to attack the Heroes.

 

Beyond this, I gave all weapons the ability to attack diagonally, and upgraded weapons which previously had the ability to attack diagonally gained the ability to attack through an empty space (Range R).

 

The ability to attack through squares, and to make shooting attacks, inspired the “Over the Shoulder” rule.

 

These three change combined made the doors a useful tactical position, but not the sole viable tactic, which was one of the primary aims of the re-write.

My industrious playtesters have been at it again, spotting typos and asking awkward questions. I've updated several of the books with corrections & clarifications. Only one small rules change, and if you blink, you'll miss it!

I'm hoping to have the Rivers of Blood scenario up soon too! It has proven very challenging to make it work properly...

During our game yesterday, the player where extactic to find magic armour, one of the rarest items in the game. Their first perma-item in over two years!

Small update today, with the upodated Treasure booklet (with the missing ring), and an updated Hazards booklet, with corrected Hazard generation tables, since the "Locked Room" was missing.

Ampersand and I hope to have the new Undead bestiary up sooner, rather than later, and in a linked project, a heavily updated Campaign IX: Rivers of Blood is nearing completion too!

All the books where recently updated, and are now looking very nice.

Today, I also added the playtest version of the recreation of the White Dwarf  campaign "The Trollslayer's Oath".

Depending on how fast i can work Ampersand, I'm hoping to have more bestiary sections soon.

One error that has been found in the books, is that the current upload of Appendix IV - Treasure, is missing the description for the Lead Ring. This should grant Aura 9. I should have an update to that soon.

I am now concurrently working on the random quest generator booklet (AKA campaign 10), and looking to see which campaign to do next!

Today we've had a full update. Many thanks to Ampersand for all his help.

The Search for the Shattered Amulet is also now fully playested.

A successful expedition

Over the least coupple of weeks, the rule books have been slowley uploaded. The last coupple are going up this weekend, and some are being updated.

Also now up is the updated base game scenario, with more to follow.

The Bestiary sections are being prepaired. The Skaven sheets will be up shortly, with others to follow.

Rolling on the Loot Table

I started uploading books today. The order I'm uploading is a little screwy, but it makes sense based on the way I'm writing.

The plan to make these into A5 booklets has proven impractical, so here we are with A4 booklets. I'll be updating the readme later.

Unearthed from the Dark Places

After much expenditure of blood, sweat, tears, and Fate Points, the newest itteration of books is finally out.

 

Version 1.6 is swisher than ever, as we have found and fixed many errors and clarified some rules.

 

There's been tweaks to the Enemy matrices, and to the rules for hiring Henchmen, with what we now have working much better than it did before. WE've also put up more Quests.

 

to follow are more bestiary sections, more quests, and perhaps a very fancy version of the books (akin to the colour version of Appendix IX) for those who want something REALLY special.

Today the site went live, after much planning.

We have started the process of uploading the printable books. More will follow over the next few weeks, until everything save the Campaign and Bestiary Books are up. These will take considerably longer!
